Officially organized in 1786 in Liberty County, Georgia, as an independent troop, this cavalry soon became known as the Liberty independent Troop. It is the oldest cavalry troop in Georgia. Its original purpose was for defense against Native Americans. The unit served in the Civil War as Troop G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry and was attached to General Wheeler's Corps, Army of the Tennessee, from 1863 until 1865 when it was disbanded.
